Colour Texture and Balance

Dropped Dates VIII

This photo has all three.

Find Arrangements

Dropped Dates V

As a nature photographer it is entirely likely that you will not be able to arrange the elements in your photograph yourself. It is therefore essential to have your eyes open for arrangements that are already in the scene and draw them out for the viewer.

Reconsider Your Decision

Dropped Dates IV

This was a "landscape" orientation shot as taken. However, I decided it looked better in "portrait" orientation. Let your eyes be the judge. If it still looks natural then do what is best for the picture.

Get Close

Dropped Dates III

Often the textures in familiar objects can be emphasized by going in close. Don't have a macro lens? Me either! There are many cheap ways of getting close with a common 50mm lens. Here, I've gotten very close with a common reversing ring. Available secondhand for the price of a small memory card.

Look Down!

Dropped Dates I

You may be stuck shooting in the same place for a long time. Even though things don't change much day to day in the large scale you may find a much greater change in the small scale.

Try Something New

Old and New

I didn't have a lot of ideas when I took this other than the idea of learning to expose for this sort of night scene without relying on the automatic modes (like P and A). Night scenes really give you latitude as a photographer. There is such a wide chasm between the shadow detail and the highlights that any number of exposures are equally valid.

Try different ones.

Ugly Can Work

Dried Up

Ugly can have a lot going for it. Ugly can have texture. Ugly might make a nice geometric arrangement. Somewhere in the ugly may be some nice colours...

Your Most Important Photographic Equipment

Upstairs at the party

...is upstairs between your ears. This shot was taken with an old 1950s camera and a tripod. It was taken from a unique vantage point because I noticed what was around me and saw the possibility.

Gold

Golden Palms

No great lessons here other than to always have a camera in the car and your eyes open.
